Baked Sweetpotato with Brown Sugar Cinnamon Butter is an easy side dish to serve alongside most entrees. The warm flavors of brown sugar and cinnamon are a perfect match for the earthy, somewhat nutty, flavor of sweet potatoes.
Sweetpotatoes! Oh, how I love thee. That hasn’t always been the case. I had to grow into the sweetpotato appreciation phase of my life. Now, I appreciate the flavor, versatility, and nutrition of the colorful root vegetable.
Before you come at for misspelling sweetpotato as one word instead of two, the North Carolina SweetPotato Commission will back me up that it’s one word, not two, and it’s always been the correct way to spell it. Somewhere along the line, the name was marketed as sweet potato instead of sweetpotato, and it stuck. Now, the commission is educating us all as to the correct term. Yes, I still have recipes on this site using the name incorrectly. Work is being done to correct all my misdeeds. I’ll get there, eventually.
Types of Sweetpotatoes
Sweetpotatoes come in a variety of colors from pale yellow, to bright orange, to purple. Orange flesh sweetpotatoes are most commonly found in grocery stores. On occasion, I have seen purple. It’s hard to tell the variety unless your grocery happens to know. Some of the more common orange varieties are Beauregard, Georgia Jet, and Covington.
Growing Sweetpotatoes
North Carolina is the greatest producers of sweetpotatoes in the US, followed by Mississippi, and California. Internationally, They’re grow in most countries that have a warm climate.

Directions for Baked Sweetpotato with Brown Sugar Cinnamon Butter
- Wash and scrub sweetpotato well. They’re roots and can hold on to dirt and grit. Nothing will disrupt enjoyment of a good sweetpotato faster than biting into grit.
- Dry and place on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil or parchment paper. Even though I prefer wrapping sweetpotatoes completely in foil prior to baking, I still recommend covering the baking sheet. Juice from the sweetpotatoes can escape through small openings in the aluminum foil. The sugar content in sweetpotatoes will cause the juice to caramelize and eventually burn which makes it difficult to clean from baking dishes.
- With a fork, pierce the sweetpotato several times. This allows steam to escape and keeps the sweetpotato from exploding in the oven.
- Completely wrap in aluminum foil. This creates a soft skin, which I prefer for eating. If your preference is for crisp skin, lightly rub oil on the skin and omit wrapping in foil. Bake in a 400 degree preheated oven for 40 to 60 minutes or until soft.
- Remove from oven and unwrap.
- Split longwise.
- Serve with Brown Sugar Cinnamon Butter .

This so AMAZING! This is a dish that I would totally make for myself and probably keep for myself. My grandmother used to make something similar when I was a little girl.

I loved this the first time I made it using brown sugar but tonight I made it with Stevia not realizing that the ratios are so different. A word to the wise, if using a substitute use a LOT less. We had to throw the whole thing away!
