Today is Tyler’s last day at home before his Spring Break is over and he returns to school. All the kids decided to go to the beach today so I make this little treat to send along. My Granny used to make Fried Pies but she only used dried apples for her filling which was a common practice. I’m not sure why dried fruit was used more than fresh fruit that had been stewed down. Maybe it was a good way for them to use the dried fruit and they had other uses for fresh fruit. Maybe it was because the flavors are more concentrated in dried fruit more so than fresh. I used frozen mixed berries for these pies because that’s what I had on hand. That’s the way I roll. You can use what ever you like, fresh, canned or dried. The important thing is not to have your filling pretty thick. I cooked the berries down until almost all the water was cooked out and then I thiclened with a little cornstarch. The left over filling made a good topping for my oatmeal!
Berries, water and sugar. Cook down your fruit, sweeten to taste.
This is to show you the consistency of my filling. Thick.
You can use whatever kind of dough you like. Even canned biscuit work. I made biscuit dough from Bisquick because <3 Bisquick. I cut them out with a 3 inch biscuit cutter.
Ta da! I removed the excess dough and will bake them off for biscuits.
Take each disc and flatten it out a little. I’m showing the side by side comparison so you can get an idea of the size of the flattened disc.
Put a teaspoon of filling in the center…..
Fold over dough……
Crimp edges with a fork….
Ready for the frying pan! They cook quick so don’t walk away once you put them in!
After frying, roll in cinnamon sugar. Or you can glaze. Or you can eat them plain. Just don’t burn your tongue. These Fried Pies are ready for the beach. I hope you enjoy them Marcia, Amy, David, Jackson, Ella and Tyler! <3
Mixed Berry Fried Pies
For filling:
2 cups frozen mixed berries
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
Cook down fruit until most of the liquid has cooked out. Thicken with a little conrstach disolved in water, if necessary.
For dough:
Use any kind of dough you like: regular biscuit dough makde fresh, canned biscuits, prepared brread dough. I made biscuit dough from Bisquick and substituted buttermilk for sweet milk. Cut out discs and flatten them out. Place a teaspoon of filling (or more depending on the size of your disc). Fold edges over and crimp with a fork. Roll in cinnamon sugar. Cool. Eat.

Flossie,
I’ll be happy to help you. Heat a skillet and put 1 to 1/2 inches of cooking oil in the skillet. I used canola oil. Heat the oil to medium high. Carefully drop some of the pies in the hot oil. Flip as soon as the first side turns golden brown. It will only take about 3 minutes. Watch them carefully. Remove from the skillet after the second side has browned. I hope this helped. Let me know if you have anymore questions.
