I suppose Summer Shandy is technically an ale punch. It’s ale mixed with lemonade. My idea of punch is at least two beverages mixed together, not to be confused with a mixed drink made with spirits. But then….what is a cocktail? Or a spritzer?
Oh, brother!
The English language has entirely too many words that have the same or similar meaning. Mind you, I’m not disparaging the English language. I love it dearly. It’s my native language and, currently, the only one I speak. I say currently because at one time I was dangerously close to being conversant in Spanish. However, I didn’t use it and you know what they say about that.
Yep. Lost it.
However you describe Summer Shandy is fine and completely your choice. Just make up a batch this summer and drink it. You find the summer a little more shandy-licious.
Y’all come see us!
Summer Shandy
yield: 6 to 8 servings
A cool summertime adult beverage made from fresh squeezed lemonade and pale ale. Lemonade is made with a simple syrup of water and sugar and mixed with fresh lemon juice. Make lemonade ahead and let it chill. I chose Samuel Adams Summer Ale because its citrusy quality complements lemonade. Keep ale in refrigerator until ready to use. Summer Shandy is best consumed right away. It doesn’t keep well.
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup water
1 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
3 cups water
3 (12 ounce) bottles pale ale (I used Samuel Adams Summer Ale), chill well before use
Add sugar and one cup water to small saucepan. Heat until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and our into a large pitcher.
Add lemon juice and 3 cups of water. Stir. Place in refrigerator and thoroughly chill.
When ready to use, carefully pour ale into pitcher. Pour into ice filled glasses.
Serve immediately.

I’ve never seen a shandy made with actual homemade lemonade! My dad loves a shandy when it’s hot, but he has the original version of beer and Sprite/7 Up (which is actually called lemonade in the UK). Yours looks lovely.
