Jackie, absolutely love the article about the Luncheon with the Girls (Menu: Retro Department Store Lunch). As a young girl in Ohio, in the late 50's & early 60's, near Cleveland, actually Grafton, Ohio, to be exact, we had close access to two NEW malls. The nearby small cities of Elyria & Lorain had several small family owned dept. stores & boutiques, also. Going shopping for a special purchase was a BIG DEAL, & lunch out was once in a BLUE moon!!! As you wrote in your article, my mother usually said, "We can't afford it!!" The times we did go, like my 13th birthday, I thought I died & went to Heaven! We went to the small cafe at J C Penneys. I remember it was a cloudy, warm, humid summer day & the AC felt so GOOD! I had the fruit plate with sherbet ( I can still taste the fresh honeydew melon & strawberries), & my mother & older sister had the chicken salad. We had such a good time! My mother & sister have since passed on, but that is one of my favorite memories. I will be 65 next July, & am seriously thinking about planning a similar luncheon birthday party with several friends & former co-workers ( I'm a retired school teacher). I love the menu & decorating tips, & plan on incorporating some of your ideas. I mentioned this to my husband & he said DO IT!!! Thanks for your great tips & this wonderful website. Mary

Just found this, so my comment is late, but my mother and I would go to Tapp’s dept. store in Columbia, SC and have corn sticks and vegetable soup. Then my mom would take the little half and half creams and pour it over the back of her spoon so it floated on top and let me sip some of her coffee. Oh, what sweet memories for me!!!

What a fun party! I would have loved to be in that little group. Woolworths…oh does that bring back memories! A magic place to a child and apparently a lot of other people. Wish it were still around.

In reply to Cindy. I could have written that post myself! We included Parisian as well. Sometimes we would spend the night at the Tutwiler, usually at Christmas along with viewing the windows at Lovemans. My grandmother and aunt accompanied us always. They are truly my fondest childhood memories.
