I PRETTY MUCH USE THESE SAME INGREDIENTS AND AMOUNTS, BUT THE ONLY THING THAT I DO DIFFERENT IS ADD NUTMEG TO THE WET AND DRY INGREDIENTS AND ABOUT 1/4 TSP OF LEMON EXTRACT. I MIX AS IF I AM MIXING CAKE BATTER AND THEN I REFRIGERATE OVERNIGHT. ONCE I TAKE OUT OF THE REFRIGERATOR, I SCOOP THE DOUGH WITH A COOKIE SCOOP AND ROLL THEM IN BALLS AND BAKE THEM FOR 10-12 MINUTES. THEY COME OUT VERY TENDER AND SOFT AND DO NOT GET HARD AT ALL.

I love reading tea cake recipes. My husband’s great grandmother made them all the time. Her recipe is basically the same as your ingredients but different ratios. She calls for a 3 c flour , 1 c sugar, 3/4 c butter, 4 tbsp buttermilk. 1/2 tsp soda and 2-3 drops of vanilla. They have just a hint of sweetness and are best eaten with a glass of “sweet milk”…..

Thank you for sharing your tea cake recipe and story. I have a very similar recipe and come from a very similar background as I am only the second generation removed from sharecroppers. My daddy used to say we were poor (that’s poooor, spelled with 4 o’s)! Sadly I did not spend time with my grandparents and as all died either before I was born or when I was very young. My recipe was passed down to me from my mother who would bake tea cakes and cut them in shapes for school parties when I was young. I don’t know who the folks are that thought these were too plain as I was always requested to bring to school parties for my children as well. My daughter-in-law hosts an annual cookie swap at Christmas and tea cakes are what I take. One year I thought I would try something different, but I was told never to do that again! Guest kept asking where the tea cakes were! Tea cakes are wholesome goodness! Thank you again for sharing.

Good morning. I am trying to find a tea cake that is super delicious but also more importantly one that does not get hard after it cools or several days later.

I made these for my father in law and let me tell you, they tasted amazing! Just a hint of sweetness after you chew . My 20 year old loved them. Your recipe tasted like my Aunt Bessie. I chose your recipe because it was simple like it should be. Many other recipes had too many ingredients and extra stuff I don’t remember seeing as a child. Thank you! My adopted southern Auntie

I’m going to make these for my Father In Law’s Birthday. He is turning 91 and him mother had a restaurant and use to make them. My great Aunt made them all the time, no one is alive that would have the recipe. Thank you for sharing yours.

I found you delicious tea cakes and have made them and there where absolutely delicious!! I haven’t tried no one else’s! These tea cakes are just right ! As a matter of fact I and going to make some in the morning! I have everything I need! Can I freeze the dough?

Ain’t y’all some little melancholy chickadees. Teacakes are and will always be in the heart , soul and fabric of most REAL Southerners. The thing about ’em is..they are recalled with some of the best memories we’ve ever had. Lot’s of Love to y’all from a little ole Tampa girl which I do consider myself southern! We when got here in Florida we (as generation passed) found that electricity was gonna change how we did everything. NOW, look at me, using a computer and internet and stuff. Y’all be good, careful and mindful of this COVID-19 thing, ya hear me?

Hey Veronica I just wanted to let you know how excited I got reading the variations you noted in your comparison bete. I’m from Effingham SC and my gran made Teacakes for us all the time as children. It’s amazing how we miss simple things we take for granted until we can’t have them any more. I’ve wished a million times I’d written down my grans recipes. Her and my Papa had a very popular motel and restaurant, James Brown even did a show at my Papas PoBoyClub! I’d treasure your family’s recipe for Teacakes if you would be willing to send it to me. I’m making a point of bringing the same magic made in the time I spent with my gran to every moment I’m blessed to be with my own J’Nëvah and Jayson.
