I found soup to be way too oily. I will adjust next time. An inch of oil is too much

My mother/grandmother made a recipe almost identical to this (and she did flour and brown her beef) except she added fresh okra which was sure yummy! I made it your way tonight and it was equally good and somehow the meat was more tender as well….

I was sitting down to look at Pinterest and came across this story. It just happened to coincide with the opening of a sermon by Dr. David Jeremiah. As they sang the old hymn I was reading the words you wrote which your grandma sang. Isn’t that such a God thing!! I started crying. I’m so glad you shared this. It will always remind me to use my gifts to help and encourage others.

My Mother made this dish a lot. It was delicious. As a matter of fact, when I cleaned her refrigerator for the last time, this was one of the left overs. I wept when I saw it knowing I would never eat hers again. It was a sad time, but I have lots of pleasant food memories and this is one of them. Thanks Jackie.

Your background story reminds me of my grandparents who immigrated to Canada from Czechoslovakia and then to the US. Always improvising meals of cabbage, sauerkraut with pork neckbones, cabbage, dumplings and bacon [ a dish known as halushky,} cabbage soup, and little meat. My faves are holupky, {stuffed cabbage} sausage, sauerkraut, fabulous green bean soup, and pierogi to name a few. Well, all of the above are my favorites! Sunday was a treat with maybe a roasted chicken. There were 6 children. I love ethnic and regional cooking recipes. It demonstrates the heart and soul of the people striving to sustain themselves.. Pinning this. Thank you for sharing.
